Book Covers & Interiors
Artist Book Covers
The objective was to choose designers/artists and make 3 book covers. I chose Regina Wamba and Charlie Davoli because I love their work. Regina Wamba is a book designer from contemporary to fantasy as well as a photographer. I focused in on her fantasy designs. I have seen her use birds and feathers in multiple designs and dark tones so I thought to incorporate those elements to embody her work. The bird spans throughout the first cover that reveals her. The second cover frames her with a diamond and is keeping within the dark tones.
Charlie Davoli is a surreal photographer that only uses his iPhone. I thought the design should be simple and feature his work. I added his tag “I create Surreal worlds using only my iPhone” to catch the audience’s attention and make them wonder how he does it. It makes them want to pick up the book.
The Phoenix in the Wind
I decided to make a fantasy based book cover plus inside pages to show my skills in this area. I wanted to challenge myself to create a book cover that was typography-based and not rely on photography/stock photos. Having a list of names for the book, I asked around which sounds like one they would read. The most votes went to “The Phoenix in the Wind.” Keeping in theme of a phoenix, I went with red and gold and a fiery background. I hand drew the feathers and scanned them in. I first sketched how I wanted the title to look then created it in Illustrator.
